Anointed with Purpose

“Then the LORD said, ‘Rise and anoint him; he is the one.’ So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power.”

– I Samuel 16:12b-13 NIV

From the throne of eternity God searches the hearts of men seeking to choose for Himself those who are willing to serve His purpose in their generation. From the throne of His sanctuary God speaks from the realm of heaven into the world He set apart for us to serve Him and connects with us to compel us and prompt us to live with the purpose of aligning our will with His in order to experience the fulfillment of His promises. By the authority of His name, His word and the anointing of His Holy Spirit, God seeks out those who are willing to be conformed to the image of His Son and be filled with the power and grace of the Spirit of Jesus Christ in order to serve Him in their generation to bring glory to the Most High, the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

When we are introduced to David in 1 Samuel 16, we discover he is not highly regarded by his father, Jesse, because when the prophet Samuel comes to Jesse’s home to anoint the new king of Israel, Jesse does not include David in the anointing ritual. In fact, Jesse admits David was out tending the sheep when it is discovered God has not chosen any of his brothers for His purpose for their generation. Even Samuel is certain, by observation solely, that the sons of Jesse who stand before him will be exactly what God is looking for. One among them, surely, must be the one God seeks as His newly anointed to serve as king over Israel. “When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the LORD’S anointed stands here before the LORD. But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'” – I Samuel 16:6-7 NIV Maybe others have disregarded you, or the world around you may cause you to believe you are insignificant. But God has sent this word from the throne of His sanctuary to remind everyone who reads it and believes in his Son that they are His child anointed with His purpose to serve Him in this generation.

In Psalm 139:16 NIV David declared, “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Before God created the heavens and the earth, David believed He had been chosen for the purpose of serving God in his generation as king over Israel. The book of Romans explains it this way, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son.” – Romans 8:28-29a NIV Everyone who believes Jesus Christ is the Son of God has been chosen by God for His purposes to serve Him in their generation. Like David, we are anointed with the Spirit of Christ so the power and grace and truth of Christ may be manifested in and through us to affect positive change and make the world around us a better place. If you are reading this today, God wants you to embrace His purpose for you, believing you are anointed with purpose to serve Him in this generation, through faith in Christ.

May God bless you and help you to align your heart, soul, mind and will with His purpose for you and allow Him to work in you both to will and to act according to His good purpose so you may experience the fullness of life Christ came for you to have.
