“From that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power.”
– I Samuel 16:13 NIV
Although David was not regarded worthy by his father, Jesse, to attend the anointing ritual being held in his home, God saw the heart of David and chose David despite his father’s rejection. David was also the youngest of all his brothers and probably not as tall in stature as his older brothers. Fortunately for David, and us as well, God does not consider appearance, status, or physical attributes as part of the determining factor in whom He deems worthy to serve His purposes. Something in the heart of David made connection with the Creator of the heavens and the earth and it was that heart connection that made David useful to God for His purpose in David’s generation.
The world may not consider us valuable, significant, or impressive by the standards it uses to determine someone’s usefulness, but God looks upon those deemed insufficient, impotent, and ignored and declares, ‘I will anoint this one and use them for My purpose in this generation!’ “Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things-and the things that are not-to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus.” – I Corinthians 1:30a NIV It is because of God David has been chosen and anointed to become king!
But what was David doing when the prophet Samuel came to his home to anoint the next king of Israel? David was tending his father’s sheep. David was being responsible with what his father had required of him. David was learning to take care of others, to look after them, manage them and defend them, as a shepherd to the sheep, as Jesus is the Shepherd of His people. David was being trained and prepared for his future position as king through what God was influencing him to do as a child. While in obscurity, David was being trained to become king!
The one who was disregarded, rejected and isolated in obscurity is the one God chose out of the world to serve His purpose. When David was anointed by the prophet Samuel, the bible says that from that day forward the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power. Everyone who believes Jesus Christ is the Son of God, receives the person, presence and power of the Holy Spirit to fulfill God’s purpose in their generation and experience the fullness of life Christ came for us to have. God’s purpose for His anointed is accomplished by His power. Everyone who confesses Jesus Christ as LORD and Savior has been chosen by God to allow His power to work in them and through them to serve His purpose in their generation.
May God bless you and help you to live with His purpose to serve Him in this generation and experience the fullness of life Christ came for us to have.
